Our Curriculum

At Heywood and District Secondary College, we offer a strong academic environment providing opportunities for all students to excel and achieve their personal best, in a safe and supportive learning environment.

At the forefront of curriculum development our College offers a rigorous and challenging curriculum based on achieving optimum results for all students. The College believes the respectful relationships between staff and students underpin the teaching and learning happening at our school.  Our Learning Model is informed by current educational research with teachers and students sharing responsibility to achieve positive learning outcomes.

We teach our local language through a Language and Culture Program which is based primarily on one of the Gunditjmara dialects, Dhauwurd Wurrung to all Year 7 and 8 students.

Our curriculum is designed to prepare students for effective participation as employees and citizens of the 21st century, the Years 7 – 10 curriculum is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum standards and is:

  • Content-rich
  • Skills-based
  • Inclusive
  • Empowering
  • Future-orientated

The approach is a mixture of direct instruction, experiential and inquiry learning and is student-centred. It recognises the needs and interests of individual students and develops collaborative and independent research and problem-solving skills.

Year 11 and 12 students elect their subjects based on pathways and a rigorous Course Counselling program, this ensure subject selection is individualised and meaningful to each senior student.
